as has already been clarified, a "Magic" number is  wins by the good guys added to losses by the bad guys.  Y'all must not be baseball fans!
I think our biggest "Magic Number" is against San Antonio at 12, which is not bad at all over 21 games!
We may be figuring out the magic number for the #1 seed here in the not too distant future if things keep clicking on the court.
GO STORM!

We could have a play-off spot clinched by July 20!!!!

Now, let me go and waste some more time to work out how early we could have #1 all wrapped up!  Grin

Yeah, magic numbers are the reason that I keep cheering as the East beats up on the West, even though it makes our team look weaker by comparison (tops in a weak conference).

You might not want to cheer for the East too much because the most important long-term goal (as Agler has emphasized) is to have the best record in the league, so as to ensure home court throughout the playoffs. That's looking to be a whole lot harder than just winning the West, and until that is locked up the starters are probably not going to get a whole lot of rest.

True, but I figure the East is doing a good enough job of beating up on itself. Wink

With the win at LA, our magic number for making the playoffs is 7 now. ( Subtract 1 for our win, and 1 more for LA and Tulsa loss.)

Furthermore our magic number for winning the Western Conference is 10.

Winning the #1 seed overall is 15  (East has more teams closer to our record).

Cheers,

We won, and LA lost. So our magic number for making the playoffs is 5, assuming we win the tie-breaker against Tulsa.

Our magic number for winning the Western Conference is 9.

Our magic number for overall #1 seed is 14.

Cheers,

With 14 games left for the Storm, it's time to update the magic numbers again.

Magic number for making the playoffs: 2

Magic number for winning the Western Conference:4

Magic number for winning overall #1 seed: 11

Minnesota could still earn the head-to-head tie-breaker over the Storm by winning the remaining two meetings and finishing with a superior Western Conference record, so the magic number on the West is five.

So, with LA and Tulsa playing each other, as long as we win on the 20th, LaurenRules gets a playoff birth as a birthday present. Fingers crossed  Smiley

@TDAO:
How can Minny win the tie breaker over us? We have already beaten them twice and we will play them two more times. If they beat us both times, then the better conference record is the tie breaker. I think we have a monopoly on that.

It's still mathematically possible for Minny to finish with a better conference record than us. We are 13-0 in the WC, with nine conference games left. Minny is 5-7 with 10 left.

The Magic Number is calculated off the lower-ranked team's best case scenario. Minny can max out at 22 wins--and if they manage that, they would finish 15-7 in the conference. So our tie-breaker with Minny is not yet decided.

How many here feel we will lose many of those conference games?  lol

I don't know why there isn't an 'x' in the standings next to the Storm name right now.

We're 19-2 with 13 games remaining.

If we lost all 13 we'd be 19-15.

LA in 5th place is 6-15 with 13 games left and should they win them all they also would be 19-15.

But since we've beaten them 4 times and only play once more the first tie breaker head to head would be 4-1 Seattle. We'd be in and they'd be out.

So as far fetched as that outcome is it wouldn't matter. Put the 'x' up in the standings.
