I
have to start my report off with a big SHOUT out to my
girl Amanda Lassiter! She was off
the hook today!
I
told people to give her a chance and she would shine.
Would have been nice to hear her interview
at the end of
the game but the kids screaming for the Starbucks
blimp made that near to impossible... like they needed a coupon for free coffee.
I
was very nervous about this game mainly because I didn't
know if Sue would
play or if they could finally beat a team they have never beaten before.
But from the very beginning it was their game and they
controlled just about everything.
Of
course being a NY fan for a couple of years I have to
say I love VJ...
that woman can sink a basket from anywhere on the court. And, even
though she was saying LJ fouled she gave the refs an ear full. Those
of us close enough to hear could not help but clap for her. Hey, someone
has to go off on the refs
and they obviously are not listening to us.
I
was very impressed with T-Spoon helping Rita up... for
a second there I thought she was going
to push her back down but she didn't. Okay, I am starting
to think that Tari is the East Coast version of LL. I believe it
was SF7 that said she liked LL better than Tari... hush your mouth girl.
I don't care
what context you say that... never, never, never, never say those words...
just think it to yourself.
One
of my favorite moments was when NY was called for another
foul and a time out was called...
half their players were complaining and griping
and
Sue was
walking to the bench and the look on her face was priceless... it basically
said: "Do
you believe these guys?" You can aim that at the refs or the players
I'm sure both would have been right.
Kamila
had a great game, a double - double... LJ had an awesome
game, again... MVP people... she just
needs to step up the rebounding. Sue had 5 rebounds,
7 points and 8 assists and I swear that most of the game she was
limping and wincing every now and then. She looked good but not even
close
to 100%; more
like 50%. I'm not sure what is up with Brondello... she is
just plain flat. I hope that she can come through and get the mini-slump
over with by the time
they go to Sac because they will need her down there.
It
was nice to meet the NY Stormfans and hang out with Kate
after
the game. Speaking
of which Kate had a NY shirt on; over that an LJ jersey and over
that a Phillips jersey... I begged her to take the Tari jersey
off and was happy to see her at
the end of the game with the LJ jersey showing.
Which
reminds me a group of us went to Jillians to shot some
pool and hang out
and as I was walking up to the place when I looked
across the street
and saw
a woman in a red shirt and jeans... I said to my friend that
looks like Sue Bird... naww... then as I went in I found
out that Sue
Bird, Amanda
Lassiter
and Burras
were standing outside the establishment while Bird talked on
her cell
phone... unfortunately they decided to leave and as we all watched
from the second
floor of Jillians Bird showed off her expert NY driving skills.
I think she must
have been a NY cab driver in her last life.
Well, that's all for me... I have to say I don't really like
the noon games all that much other than the fact that I get out
of
work early. Next time I'm
bringing ear plugs because those kids have a pitch that probably
had dogs all over Puget Sound barking.

The
pre-game music at the Key is getting better, but it still
needs to last longer and be louder. Still too quiet in
there. But thank god we finally got
some more modern songs.
Mascot mania. (Doppler's alleged birthday, after all) OK, we need a mascot like
the Detroit thingamajiggie. He kept whooping at the crowd and then having the
crowd whoop back. Then he got them to clapping. Now that's what a mascot is supposed
to do - create excitement. Not run around and drop his drawers.
However, it could be worse. I thought the Sacramento mascot was bad (see the
caption this photo) but damn, Haley the Comets mascot is freakin scary. The
coolest thing the mascots did was to carry John Curley off the court. Now THAT
was a great idea....
Anthem: most def. A young boy did it - I'd guess he was about 9. Reminded me
of a young Michael Jackson - smoooooth, soulful, and gestured with his hands
like a grownup. Holy moly, I was moved to yell, "tell it, baby!" at
one point. You could see Weatherspoon's teeth in the dark, she was smiling so
big. The kid got big big applause, and rightly so.
Satanicism of the refs: about a 7.5. When I walked in and saw #35 I knew we
were going to have it rough. A second ref also sucked, but a third was decent.
It didn't hurt us overall though. Despite Donovan almost getting a technical
while trying to talk some sense into the aforementioned #35. (she should know
better than that by now)
I gotta give props to the Liberty. With the exception of the floppin Tari Phillips,
they are a classy team. Especially T-Spoon, who acts as the team mother. Tends
to them when they go down, exhibits sportsmanship during the game. Gives head
hugs to Bird and Simone. Her love for the game is a joy to see. No wonder she's
had such a long and successful career.
Our beloved wnbatalker wore two jerseys at the same time, and wore the appropriate
one depending on which side she sat on (she had two seats). She had mucho mucho
fun, which I am sure she'll tell you about later. I'm sure all of you who got
a chance to meet her adored her as much as jezzie and I did.
Dudes, I've said it before and I'll say it again. And when I do, picture me
at the game holding up my hands in a big old "T." I loves me some Tully
Bevilaqua. Damn but that little spazz is a heart-warmer. She had a stanza where
she was on Spoon like a cheap pimp suit, arms a-wavin and feet a-dancin, as usual.
Threw Spoon off, and they didn't get the shot off. It was all Tully. Then she
comes over to the bench for the timeout and her expressions.....ah, Tully's expressions
are the best on the team, hands down. For those who haven't seen it up close,
I can only describe it as impish. Kind of a cute lil devilish grin that melts
your heart. She marched over to the bench and was emoting and gesturing, then
planted her foot on the chair and started emphatically talking to Alisa Burras,
nodding and bobbing her head. Jezzie and I were peeing our pants laughing. Tully,
Tully, Tully......you wanna come over for dinner?
We did see Bird, Lassiter and Burras try to go to the restaurant next to Jillian's.
Then they conferred on the sidewalk outside while Birdjack and I watched. They
crossed the street and got into a hot jaguar and Bird made the previously-described
traffic maneuver. No biggie though - I woulda done the same thing myself.
Oh, did I mention that Lauren Jackson is one awesome beast? Nuff said.
