Whew!
This one was one tough tough tough game!!!. I can tell both
sides wanted to win this game very bad, and they gave it all
they got. I am glad Storm came out on top, though I
must admit it looked desperate for us at times.
We were behind 2-6 points most of the first half. In fact
I don't remember being ahead or in a tie, except at the very
end where we managed to tie the score with a run. LJ was doubled
and tripled throughout the first half. We finally saw the
game plan when they double- team LJ. The other post player,
Kamila or Simone, slashes into the lane, gets the assist from
LJ, and puts in an easy layup. Well, everything worked well
except the last easy layup part. Both Kamila and Simone kept
missing those easy buckets, and we couldn't ever get a lead.
They need to settle down and execute more smoothly. Had they
made those easy buckets, LJ could have had a triple double
with 10+ assists. Katie was quiet most of the first half,
finishing with 7 points.
The second half started with a Lynx surge. We fell behind
6-7 points and stayed there for a while. Every time
we made a run up and closed the score to within 1 or 2, they
came right back up. Finally Sue and Rita made some key baskets
and started the Storm offense. Welcome back Sue! Couldn't
have come back at a better time! The two teams traded 1 point
leads for a while , and then finally the referees started
calling fouls on Katie. She was pushing and showing, holding
down elbows, pulling back jerseys all throughout the game.
Finally the referees started seeing and calling her fouls!Meanwhile
Burras came in and started nailing those easy buckets under
the basket. Good job Burras! Lynx stopped doubling LJ in the
final 5 minutes of the game, and that's when LJ did most of
the damage, pulling the Storm ahead for good. The game was
very tight all the way to the end, but we were up 1 to 4 points
throughout the last few minutes.

I
had some dopes sitting next to me. The woman was screaming,
and I mean SCREAMING, "Block it Lauren!" or other
such cheers. Now I don't mind cheering the team on but it
was so shrill it reminded me of camp day a couple of weeks
back. Another time she said, "Go Tully!" Which would
have been fine, but Tully was on the bench and Sandy had just
made the play. The dude next to me called Amanda "Amy."
It was a strangely reffed game. Saw a number of things not
get called, and some calls for no reason. On the over and
back call to start the second half, if Sue didn't argue, then
it was probably the correct call. She knew it before the whistle
even blew.
A few times towards the end of the game I was too nervous
to cheer. I tried to remain stoic just in case the unthinkable
happened. When Katie fouled out, I was much relieved. I hadn't
been watching her much but was she fouling a lot in the first
half and not getting called or did she just get much more
aggressive in the second half? She had all 6 of her fouls
after half time.
I'm beginning to think as Amanda goes, so goes the team. Another
fabulous game by her. Couple of key blocks and tough D. Even
though she's a starter I get the feeling that she's an unsung
hero. Rita too. I wasn't too sure why we picked her up but
she seems to be in the right place at the right time.
Best play of the game was at the end. I think it was Amanda
who was scrambling on the floor to grab the ball as time ran
out. It was right in front of Karen Bryant and I thought Karen
was going to pig pile on Amanda as the horn sounded. Awesome!

I
was worried and tense a lot of the game and was relieved to
finally pull out a win against this team. I though "uh-oh"
when I saw ref #18, but even though I was often confused as
to why they would call one thing a jump ball and not another,
and call other jump balls fouls, etc., it wasn't the worst
game I've been to, as far as calls, by a long shot. In my
opinion. Or more likely I'm just numb and resigned to it all
at this point.
The relatively huge crowds have been a lot of fun, though
you notice the difference after the game when you're trying
to leave. Some non-fans had some nasty comments on the sidewalk
because of the traffic as I walked by, but I figured if my
players could ignore the refs, I could ignore another type
of ignorant folk. Should that be my new motto, what would
the Storm do?
Anyway, it's a lot of fun being with a crowd that's willing
to cheer so lustily. I spoke with some out-of-towners
from Mystics country last game, and they noticed the enthusiasm
of our crowd. When LJ had that offense rebound/put-back near
the end, I jumped up and cheered and nearly dented the bobble-head
under my seat. Whoops.
It was great to see Burras come in and really clog the middle
and take it to the Lynx. Kamila and Simone were killing me
when they kept bobbling and losing or missing off of LJ's
passes. It was a great set-up, though, and I was glad
when Alisa started capitalizing with it at the end. I
love to see her come in and battle it out down low, because
she is built, and it just seems as if the smaller players
are like gnats.
It was nice to see Sue's shots falling. I'm pleased to see
our bench contributing more. I was dying about their
ability to rebound, but I guess we got it when it counts.
You go girls.
