6/11/04 vs Connecticut Sun

As I'm trekking down to my seat, I look towards the floor and think, "why are the ladies warming up in front of me? Did I walk in the wrong section?"

That threw me a loop this game.  It felt really weird and dissatisfying.  To the opposing team I would hope that you respect the home court and their fans.... stay on your side please!!!!!  They don't do it to you. (not that I know of)

Is it just me or does it seem like there is a Lennox/Sam connection?  It seems like the two were disportionally passing to each other, than the rest of the team.  And one of them was the target of a little LJ frustration, an incident during a rebound.  It seems like Betty spent a lot of time on the bench. Was she hurting, or was AD chilling her out?

It was nice to see smiling, happy, friendly, but still crappy calling refs tonight.   I like the all woman group.  They seemed to keep it a bit more relaxed in the beginning of the first half.  And I was thrilled to see KV get the first points of the game and NOT the first foul.
Then all those BS calls got laid on Tully, and I just remembered, yeah, they still make crappy decisions.

The very buff ref took a little extra time to make sure Sam was ok after a hit to the eye and what looked like a contact lens issue.  I thought that very cool.  You can come back anytime girl!!!

Also very nice to see the player of the week get some minutes at the beginning of the game.

For as many kids as there were it was very quiet tonight.  I chalk it up to not having a lot of CHARGE!! or pump you up stuff from the PA.  Also, games always seem a bit more fun with Big Lo there.  I couldn't believe how many chillins' were on the floor... thank goodness they don't bring out the train on camp day.  Which reminds me.... gotta find those earplugs.

It was a Vrules kind of game. A beauty 3 point shot, the opening point, the double/double, great minutes, and another home court win.  And as much as I was thrilled to see her interviewed after the game, David, PLEASE keep the questions shorter and with simpler language.  It looked like she'd follow him for awhile and then a word would throw her off.  And she doesn't get to talk on the floor very much, go ahead and just pass her the darn microphone, you know she likes to hold it.

Despite what I think is coming across as griping, I really was thrilled to spend another great night at the Key.  These truly are the best months out of the year.

11 days till the next home stand.... brutal.

Good luck to the ladies on the away game stretch. SFICL, it's up to you to bring the Key to Texas, and SF7 in NY!

GO STORM!!!!!!

Anyone seen the guest book, sitting on a podium in the hallway on the way to the team shop? Fans have signed in, and a surprising number have included their phone numbers. One guy wrote, "Adia I love you, will you marry me?" I do feel like calling his number and saying.....but I'm not gonna.

I missed the moment of silence for Raygun, apparently. I was off taking a piss. How appropriate.

Lisa Mattingly was one of the refs. Right away, Leighway, BJV and I groaned. She is one of the worst. Right when I was noticing they hadn't gone barbaric on the calls yet, Mattingly's whistle started going off, and it never stopped. Unbelievable amount of total bullshit calls. In 16 seconds of the second half (from 19 to 18:45 to go) she whistled the Storm for 4 fouls - two of them Kamila's. I was just starting to think the refs would ruin the game for me, but then Kamila responded by going on a scoring tear, bless her heart. But I digress. Another ref, Ann Disk, wasn't too bad, but she seemed more like a grandmother out there. Ref Lisa Jones was the best - if not for anything else, her buff arms and rock hard other parts.

Storm players were clearly frustrated by the idiotic and stupid ass calls. In one instance, Lauren was knocked to the ground mid-court and on foul was called. She was looking Leighway's, BJV's and my way and yelled "f*ck this!" sending us into giggles. Another time, Tully was whistled for a bullshit call. Our normally jovial Australian, eyes wide in disbelief, asked Mattingly something and, after receiving the answer, turned to Donovan and simply gestured toward Mattingly, her mouth open in disbelief. Ann then got up and went after the ref. The whole thing was freakin hysterical. I would like to take Mattingly, Sally Bell, June Courteau and Fonzie and.....oh, nevermind.

That Candace Futrell, the other Sun rookie, is pretty dang good. Where the hell is Duquesne?

I noticed Nancy Bird came down and sat right in front of us. She is the coolest mom, dancing to the music at all times. Right after the players came out for shoot-around, Nancy was waving at her daughter to get her attention. Sue finally looked over and Nancy made some funny face, and Sue gave her this look back that was kinda slightly embarassed, like, "oh MOM!" I stepped over the seats and tapped Nancy on the shoulder. I asked her at what age does that being-too-cool-or-maybe-embarrassed-about-your-mom thing ever goes away. She laughed heartily and said it never goes away. What a fun woman.

I agree with you, eclair, in that it's fun to see other teams underestimate Adia. There was one moment, right in front of the Storm bench, when she was defending the rookie Futrell, and it was comical. Futrell turned to the right, there's Adia's arm; to the left, Adia's arm. Adia was all over her like plaster. It was a beautiful thing. She did so well last night.

Greco had someone in the audience, cause she kept looking up toward section 111 and giving whomever this coy look. Hmmmmm

Kamila is so cute in interviews.

The Good: Adia showed she can still cover like a blanket. Lennox played some serious in your face D. Kamila had a great night. Her shots were dropping and she stayed out of foul trouble. Lauren had her usual. Sue came up with some good assists. Betty was getting board after board.

The Bad: Sue couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. I don't know if it was that she was trying to hard with her mother there or not. Just one of those nights. The refs of course still suck, but they suck in the NBA too. Slam someone no foul. Tap someone, foul.

The Ugly: The Storm rely on transition baskets to bury other teams. We looked pretty bad in transition. There were a lot of missed opportunities. Sheri Sam needs to look for Lennox coming down court instead of trying to push it through and getting called for a offensive foul. Same with others in transition. Betty was usually down court and could have taken a bounce pass for a quick layup. They need to work on this. Then better shot selection: a lot of the time they were taking the first shot they saw.

Offense. Sue had a major mismatch over Black. Betty had another mismatch. No height advantage but speed and quickness. Spread the offense and let one of those two isolate. Work the offense through Lauren.

Defense: They tend to fall asleep when playing with a 10 point lead or better. That's when they need to start burying the other team and showing no mercy.

Caveat: you can see a lot more from the stands than you can on the court. But this win was UGLY. You can bet AD will have them working on this stuff before their road trip next week.
